There are only a few people that come to mind as the G.O.A.T (Greatest of all time) in combat sports and Geroges Saint Pierre is definately one of them. Recently GSP came to Hammer’s Gym in Nunawading, Melbourne to display some of the techniques that helped him rise to the top along with fantastic golden nuggets of advice that resonated with all students. One of the main lessons St. Pierre talked about was maintaining a white belt mentaility. This means whatever rank you achieve in your chosen discipline approach it with that same eagerness to learn and enthusiasm as you did when you first began. Another lesson GSP shared was more personal in the fact he is just as terrified before a fight as anyone else. A good memorable saying he repeated was “Fake it till you make it” or “Feel the fear and do it anyway”,
For the technical aspects of the MMA seminar St Pierre displayed some standup striking situations involving Muay Thai techniques such as feints, calf kicks and superman punches to begin with followed by a double leg takedown. For the ground part of the seminar he taught Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) movements such as gaining a crucifix position from side control leading into either an americana or kimura arm lock submission. The seminar was fantastic for all involved as most participants had trained more so in a single martial art and got valuable experience in some positions and techniques they were not used to training in.
