Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a predominantly ground-based martial art. Its central focus is to achieve a submission on a resisting opponent without the use of striking. This is accomplished by the application of chokes or joint manipulations. By using the principals of leverage, angles, pressure and timing, as well as knowledge of the human anatomy, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches students how to control and overcome greater size, strength, and aggression. Students that train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Hammer’s Gym gain a deep understanding of the limitations of the human body and how to use it against an opponent.

There are many physical benefits of training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The dynamic and explosive movements are combined with pressure based isometric pulling, pushing, and holding. This not only promotes weight loss but increases strength and cardio endurance.

But it’s not only great for your body! Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is commonly referred to by its community as ‘human chess’. This is because it not only exercises the body, but also the mind. With the limitless variations of submissions, movements, and techniques you sharpen your reasoning skills, plan your next step and work both advantageous and defensive positions.

Due to the nature of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu it is unique in that anyone can do it! It is designed to help students develop techniques that can control and overcome all types of people. Regardless of your age, weight, size, or physical limitations.

Our classes are structured for an easy transition even if you’re new to the martial arts or have been training for some time. We provide White Belt Basic’s classes for those that are just beginning and Advanced Classes for those that have more knowledge of the combat sport.

Our highly experienced and accomplished instructors will guide you through our fully graded system, teaching you all they have learnt from their many years of training.

NO GI BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU

The traditional Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class is trained in a uniform called a Gi. A Gi is a heavily stitched Cotton long sleeved kimono style uniform consisting of a jacket and long cut pants. The Gi is used to grip and hold your opponent and can be used against them.

A Brazilian Jiu Jitsu No Gi unform consists of tight fitting ‘rash guard’ that cannot be gripped by the opponent.  The difference between the two uniforms is that students need to maneuver different hand grips in order to attempt a submission.
