Muay Thai for Beginners: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Class

Thinking about trying Muay Thai for the first time?

You might be excited, curious, or maybe a little nervous. You may be wondering whether you’re fit enough, what you should wear, whether you’ll need your own equipment or even what actually happens during a Muay Thai class.

The good news is that you don’t need any previous martial arts experience to get started.

Muay Thai is a fantastic way to improve your fitness, learn new skills, build confidence and challenge yourself in a supportive training environment.

If you’re considering your first Muay Thai class, here’s everything you need to know.

What Is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is a traditional martial art from Thailand that uses punches, kicks, knees and elbows.

It’s often known as the “Art of Eight Limbs” because fighters use eight points of contact, two fists, two elbows, two knees and two shins/feet.

But Muay Thai isn’t only for competitive fighters.

People train Muay Thai for many different reasons, including:

  • Improving fitness
  • Losing body fat
  • Building strength and endurance
  • Learning martial arts
  • Developing confidence
  • Relieving stress
  • Learning self-defence skills
  • Trying something different from traditional gym training

You don’t have to step into a ring to enjoy the benefits of Muay Thai.

Do I Need to Be Fit Before Starting Muay Thai?

Absolutely not.

This is one of the biggest misconceptions about starting martial arts.

You don’t need to arrive at your first class already being extremely fit. Your fitness will develop as you train.

Like any new form of exercise, your first few sessions may feel challenging. You might get tired quickly, and that’s completely normal.

The important thing is to start at a level you’re comfortable with and gradually improve.

Over time, you’ll likely notice that you can train for longer, recover more quickly and handle exercises that initially seemed difficult.

Don’t wait until you’re fit enough to start Muay Thai. Start Muay Thai to become fitter.

What Should I Bring to My First Muay Thai Class?

For your first class, you generally don’t need a special uniform.

Comfortable sportswear is a great place to start.

Think:

  • T-shirt or training top
  • Shorts
  • Comfortable athletic clothing
  • Water bottle
  • Gym Towel

You’ll want clothing that allows you to move freely and doesn’t restrict your legs or upper body.

Once you’ve decided that Muay Thai is something you want to continue, you can look into getting dedicated training equipment and clothing.

Do I Need Gloves and Other Equipment?

You don’t need to turn up to your first class with a huge bag full of martial arts equipment.

As you progress with your training, you’ll likely want your own equipment, including things such as:

  • Boxing gloves
  • Hand wraps
  • Shin guards
  • Mouthguard
  • Appropriate Muay Thai training gear

At Hammer’s Gym, gloves, shin guards and uniforms can be purchased at reception for members who want to continue their Muay Thai training.

If you’re unsure about what equipment you need, speak with your coach. They can help you understand what is appropriate for your level and the type of training you’re doing.

What Happens During a Beginner Muay Thai Class?

Every gym and coach may structure their sessions slightly differently, but a typical class can include several different parts.

Warm-Up

You’ll usually start by getting your body moving.

This might involve skipping, jogging, mobility exercises or other movements designed to raise your heart rate and prepare your body for training.

Technique

You’ll then learn or practise Muay Thai techniques.

This could include punches, kicks, knees, defensive movements, footwork or combinations.

For beginners, the focus should be on learning the fundamentals and developing good technique.

Pad Work

Pad work is a popular part of Muay Thai training.

You may work with a coach or training partner to practise combinations on focus mitts or Thai pads.

It’s a great way to develop technique, timing, coordination and fitness.

Conditioning

Some sessions may also include conditioning exercises designed to challenge your cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance.

Don’t worry if you can’t complete everything perfectly during your first class.

You’re there to learn.

Will I Have to Spar on My First Day?

No.

Beginners should first focus on learning the fundamentals, developing technique and becoming comfortable with the movements.

Sparring is a different aspect of martial arts training and should be approached progressively and appropriately.

If you’re nervous about contact, let your coach know.

A good coach will understand that everyone has different experience levels and comfort levels.

Is Muay Thai Dangerous?

Like any physical activity, Muay Thai carries some risk of injury.

However, appropriate coaching, controlled training, good technique and suitable protective equipment can all help manage those risks.

You should always train within your abilities and listen to your coach.

You also don’t need to train at maximum intensity every session.

There’s a big difference between challenging yourself and simply trying to exhaust yourself.

What If I Make Mistakes?

You will.

And that’s completely fine.

You’re learning something new.

You might forget a combination, kick with the wrong leg, lose your balance or completely forget what your coach just demonstrated.

It happens to everyone.

The important thing is to listen, ask questions and keep practising.

Nobody walks into their first Muay Thai class looking like a professional fighter.

Everyone starts somewhere.

How Often Should a Beginner Train?

There’s no single answer that works for everyone.

For many beginners, starting with two or three sessions per week can be a good way to become familiar with the training without overwhelming yourself.

As your fitness and experience improve, you can gradually increase your training frequency if it suits your goals and schedule.

Consistency is more important than trying to do too much too quickly.

Training twice a week consistently is generally more useful than training five times one week and then stopping for the next three.

Can Muay Thai Help With Weight Loss?

Muay Thai can be a great addition to a weight-loss program.

Training involves plenty of movement and can provide a challenging cardiovascular workout while also developing muscular endurance and coordination.

However, weight loss isn’t determined by exercise alone.

Your overall nutrition, activity levels, sleep and lifestyle all play a role.

The best approach is to combine regular training with sustainable nutrition and healthy habits.

Can I Combine Muay Thai With Weight Training?

Absolutely, and the two complement each other well; see our guide to weight training and martial arts and why Reformer Pilates suits martial artists.

Yes.

In fact, combining martial arts with strength training can be an excellent way to build a well-rounded fitness routine.

Muay Thai can help develop cardiovascular fitness, coordination, agility and conditioning, while resistance training can help develop strength and muscle.

You don’t necessarily have to choose between the two.

A balanced training week could include a combination of:

Strength training + Muay Thai + Recovery.

The right balance will depend on your goals, experience and how much time you have available.

What Are the Benefits of Muay Thai?

From Hollywood actors to everyday Melburnians, the appeal is the same. Read why Muay Thai is for everyone and celebrities who train Muay Thai.

Regular Muay Thai training can provide both physical and mental benefits.

Physical benefits can include:

  • Improved cardiovascular fitness
  • Increased muscular endurance
  • Better coordination
  • Improved balance and movement
  • Increased strength
  • Greater overall fitness

Mental benefits can include:

  • Increased confidence
  • Greater discipline
  • Stress relief
  • Improved concentration
  • A sense of achievement
  • Learning to challenge yourself
  • Socialising

And perhaps one of the biggest benefits is that training can be fun.

When you enjoy the activity you’re doing, staying consistent becomes much easier.

What If I’ve Never Done Martial Arts Before?

That’s exactly what novice Muay Thai classes are for.

You don’t need a background in boxing, kickboxing or martial arts.

A beginner-friendly class should teach you the fundamentals progressively and give you the opportunity to develop your skills over time.

Don’t compare yourself to people who have been training for months or years.

Focus on your own progress.

Your first goal isn’t to be the best person in the class.

Your first goal is simply to show up.
